Picture of Standpoint Counseling Services owner Shannon Grimsley

Welcome to my practice! My name is Shannon Grimsley (she/her/hers). I am a therapist who specializes in the treatment of anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and life transitions. I use a trauma informed and strengths based approach to support my clients. I believe you are the expert on you and I strive to meet you where you are to support your individual needs and goals.

I have training and experience in using a variety of different modalities including inference based CBT (I-CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for treating OCD, as well as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness techniques, and person centered therapy.

I graduated in 2011 with a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland. I have worked in a variety of different settings in three different states, including school based treatment, inpatient addictions treatment, and intensive outpatient settings for mental health and addictions treatment. It has always been my goal to create a practice that aligns with my values; I opened Standpoint Counseling Services in 2022.

My practice is LGBTQIA+ affirming and competent. I welcome individuals who are seeking a place to explore their gender identity and expression. I have training and experience in letter writing to support clients who are seeking gender affirming medical care. I also provide affirming care for neurodivergent clients who are formally diagnosed or self-diagnosed.

Anxiety can take many forms and I am here to support you in your journey to better understand your experience and get ‘unstuck’ from the worries, racing thoughts, or specific fears that make it difficult for you to live the life you want. I will support you in identifying your personal values and take action towards freeing yourself from stress and worry and becoming who you are.

Insurance information

Standpoint Counseling Services accepts Aetna, Cigna, and United Healthcare/Optum plans. It is up to you to know your insurance benefits.

You may be able to use your out of network benefits in order to receive reimbursement for your session from your insurance company. You are responsible for contacting your insurance company to determine whether this applies to your plan. We can provide a superbill upon request for you to submit to insurance for reimbursement.

What is a superbill? A specialized receipt that contains our business and tax information as well as billing and diagnosis codes relevant to services provided.

NOTE: if you are seeking self pay services in order to avoid a diagnosis record, then you will not want to request a superbill.

Benefits of Self-pay Service

  • No diagnosis is required.

  • Treatment goals are determined by you and your clinician as a self-pay client. When using insurance, treatment may be limited by what your insurance company determines is medically necessary. This could mean a denial of coverage for types of services or diagnoses, and may determine length and number of sessions.

  • Greater confidentiality. When using insurance your session notes, diagnosis, and history is required to be shared with your insurance company. As a self-pay client the only people who will have access to your personal health information are you and your clinician.

Benefits of Online Counseling

  • Increased access to care

  • No commute, traffic, or long drives.

  • No need to cancel due to weather

  • Meeting from the comfort of your home

Additional Considerations for Online Counseling

  • I cannot ensure privacy in your home - please make sure you schedule appointments at a time where you can minimize interruptions from others, consider using a sound machine if others will be home at the time of your appointment.

  • At this time Standpoint Counseling Services is only able to provide therapy to residents of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Kentucky. You must be in one of these states at the time of your appointment or it will need to be rescheduled.

Good Faith Estimate

Health care providers are required to provide a good faith estimate for any non-emergency health care services, which includes mental health care.

Under the No Surprises Act, you have the right to dispute a bill that is $400 over your good faith estimate.
